Unlike Australia, and helped by restrictions on how many Japanese cars could be sold in New Zealand, the Escort and Cortina ranges sold well and often topped the car monthly sales lists. The Chevy Monza received the honor of being named the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1975. Originally criticized for its lackluster inline-four engine, those criticisms were put to rest when the car received a V8 option as well. In a few short months, he entered the hospital for the last time and spent a solid year there. Numerous refinements marked Escort's evolution through 1990. There were always three-door hatchbacks and four-door wagons, plus hatchback sedans after 1981. All rode a 94.2-inch wheelbase and employed transverse-mounted four-cylinder engines -- a new "CVH" single-overhead-cam design with hemispherical combustion chambers -- initially teamed with four-speed overdrive manual or three-speed automatic transaxles. You have no credit card or family to get you out of that and this is your whole life ahead of you and many of you are very likely to die young, so why would you bother with a pension if you thought there was a higher than 50% chance you're going to die before you're 60. You just wouldn't.

The remaining Heinkels 111s attacked out of the sun and claimed one ship sunk and one damaged. The freighters were attacked by Luftwaffe aircraft and U-boats and of the 35 ships, only eleven reached their destination, delivering 70,000 long tons (71,000 t) of cargo. Not only did Italy have considerable naval power, its land-based aircraft could reach almost anywhere in the Mediterranean, regarded by the Italians as "our sea" as it had been in the time of the Roman Empire. It was sighted by German aircraft on 30 June and 2 July. A new ice reconnaissance flown on 3 July found the passage north of Bear Island had widened. It consisted of thirty-five ships and was escorted by five destroyers, three corvettes, an anti-aircraft ship, three minesweepers, two trawlers and to the Bear Island area, a submarine. Distant cover came from the 1st Cruiser Squadron (CS1, Hamilton), consisting of the British cruisers HMS best independent london escorts (flagship) and Norfolk, the American cruisers USS Wichita and Tuscaloosa and four destroyers, two American and two British. The growing German air strength in Norway and increasing losses to convoys and their escorts, led Rear-Admiral Stuart Bonham Carter, commander of the 18th Cruiser Squadron, Admiral Sir John Tovey, Commander in Chief Home Fleet and Admiral Sir Dudley Pound the First Sea Lord, the professional head of the Royal Navy, unanimously to advocate the suspension of Arctic convoys during the summer months.

Air support was limited to 330 Squadron and 269 Squadron, RAF Coastal Command from Iceland, with some help from anti-submarine patrols from Sullom Voe, in Shetland, along the coast of Norway. Rear-Admiral Louis Hamilton, in command of the cruiser squadron, later decided that a more northerly route was necessary, ordered the SOE to alter course, to pass 70 nmi (130 km; 81 mi) north of Bear Island and later on to open to 400 nmi (740 km; 460 mi) from Banak. The convoy's cruiser covering force was not to go east of Bear Island, unless the convoy was threatened by the presence of a surface force which the cruiser force could fight, nor to go beyond 25° East under any circumstances. British naval intelligence in June reported Unternehmen Rösselsprung (Operation Knight's Move), the German plan to use their big ships to attack the next convoy, east of Bear Island. In early September, Finnish Radio Intelligence deciphered a Soviet Air Force transmission which divulged the convoy itinerary, which was forwarded it to the Germans. August 5: Nazi German forces destroy Russia's 16th and 20th armies in the "Smolensk pocket." Germans capture more than 300,000 soldiers.

HMS Amazon and HMS Ambuscade were launched in 1926 and they were the prototypes for the following nine classes (A to I) launched between 1929 and 1941. The classes J to N, 40 ships launched between 1938 and 1940, were more complex, with heavier armament and expensive to build. The convoy was the first large joint Anglo-American naval operation under British command; in Churchill's view this encouraged a more careful approach to fleet movements. At first the British had intended to run convoys to Russia on a forty-day cycle (the number of days between convoy departures) during the winter of 1941-1942 but this was shortened to a ten-day cycle. The area is in perpetual darkness in winter and permanent daylight in the summer and can make air reconnaissance almost impossible. In winter, polar ice can form as far south as 50 mi (80 km) off the North Cape and in summer it can recede to Svalbard.
